Legend:
The name "Hakgala" is derived from the Sinhala words "hak" (jaw) and "gala" (rock), referring to the shape of the rock formation, which is said to resemble a jawbone.
According to local legend, the rock formation is linked to the Ramayana, where the monkey god Hanuman is said to have carried a piece of the Himalayas in his jaw to find a medicinal herb.
